Samuel Bower was an English mystic who lived for a time at
Amos Bronson Alcott’s
Fruitlands community in 1843. By 1850, Bower, who had advocated nudity as the ultimate freedom, was considering quitting his job as a wood-comber at the Lowell, Massachusetts textile mills and seeking another “Holy Land” on the western frontier.
