Caroline Sturgis Tappan, 1819–1888

Caroline Sturgis Tappan, the sister of Ellen Sturgis Hooper, was important as a Transcendentalist poet and member of the Transcendental Club.  She was intimate with Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson, who eventually called her “the Ideal Friend.”  Her poems “Bettina,” “Light in Shade,” and “Windmill” were published in the Dial.
